Deer Hunting Information for Matagamon
Wilderness Camps
Every year, we offer a
free hunt at Matagamon for the largest buck taken during the deer
season.
We
are located in northern Penobscot County, 26 miles west of Patten in
excellent deer country. We are a wilderness operation consisting
of 6 camps and a small general store. Hunting pressure is
light due to the vastness of area wilderness. Our bucks run large, many
dress out over 200lbs. and as large as 300 lbs. Most carry large racks.
Seasons currently run: the month of October for archery; the first 4
weeks of November are rifle season; and the week following Thanksgiving
week is for muzzle-loading. Archery hunting is very light in this area.
The first three weeks in November have the most hunting pressure;
the last week of rifle season and the muzzle-loading week, you probably
wouldn't see any other hunters in the woods. You could expect snow anytime
during November, usually by mid-month and most probably for the last week
and muzzle-loading week. Chances for big bucks increase at this time due
to rut, light hunting pressure, colder weather, and usually snow.
You
may hunt on your own or hire a Registered Maine Guide. Also, we offer our"
one on one" trophy hunt. This hunt is a seven day, all included: lodging,
food, and transportation (4x4, boats, snowmobiles). Unless arranged
differently, all hunters arrive Sunday and depart the following Sunday.
Hunt with the experts "one-on one".
Limit of 2 trophy hunters weekly.
Cabins
sleep 4-12 people. All have
propane heat and wood heat also. All
have gas cook stoves, gas lights, and
complete cooking & eating utensils. A shower building is centrally
located. You will need to bring personal items, sleeping bags, and
coolers.
Hunting licenses are available at general store.
We
hope to be able to help you plan a successful deer hunt. If you have further
questions feel free to call or write.
